Barthes Vision photo exibition opening 6 May

Tallinn

Mar 1 2016 / May 6 2016

Tallinn

Opening of the photo exhibition 6 May at 6 pm; at the shopping centre Viru Keskus! Come join us! The competition received over a hundred photos and the best ten art workds will be on display at the exhibition in the atrium of Viru Keskus until end of June.

For the centennial anniversary of Roland Barthes, a major French thinker and semiotician, the French Institute invites you to read again his famous quotes and take a photo inspired by one of them. Barthes is the author of "Camera lucida", a book about his reflection on photography, and it became the most cited text on photography. This time we are not only searching pleasure of text, but also looking for beauty and pleasure of images!

To take part in the"Barthes Vision" photo contest send your photograph to barthesvision@www.ife.ee  (JPEG format, minium size 1 MB). The photo has to be an illustration of the quote, but there is no need to write the quote on your picture. Add separately, which quote is being illustrated and a short motivation for choosing the photo.

The deadline to send your photo(s) is April 20th 2016.

A jury of photographers and semioticians will select 10 images that will be exhibited at the Viru Keskus shopping centre's atrium on the first floor starting from May.

The main prize of the contest is a polaroid camera Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic.

Quotes selection of the contest :

  • #barthesvision1
  • Once I feel observed by the lense, I transfom myself in advance into an image
  • #barthesvision2
  • What the photograph reproduces to infinity has occurred only once
  • #barthesvision3
  • The photograph of the missing being will touch me like the delayed rays of a star
  • #barthesvision4
  • The photograph sometimes makes appear what we never see in a real face (or in a face reflected in a mirror)
  • #barthesvision5
  • The air is the luminous shadow which accompanies the body ; and if the photogaph fails to show this air, then the body moves without a shadow.
  • #barthesvision6
  • What I hide by my language, my body utters. My body is a stubborn child, my language is a civilised adult.
  • #barthesvision7
  • Society is concerned to tame the photograph, to temper the madness which keeps threatening to explode in the face of whoever looks at it.
  • #barthesvision8
  • Colouring the world is always a means to deny it.
  • #barthesvision9
  • The wall irresistibly encourages us to express in a trace our deepest dreams, our angry thoughts or our private feelings.
  • #barthesvision10
  • What the public wants is the image of passion, not passion itself
  • #barthesvision11
  • I get worried about a society which consumes with such avidity the display of charity that it forgets to ask itself questions about its consequences, its uses and its limits
  • #barthesvision12
  • Fashion is indeed the collective imitation of regular novelty
  • #barthesvision13
  • The image freezes an endless number of possibilities. Words determine a single certainty.
  • #barthesvision14
  • Language is a skin
  • #barthesvision15
  • What is a face if not a quote ?

Barthes Vision is an international project, find inspiration and joy from photos sent from all around the world: http://www.barthes.vision/.
