Let’s debate Europe in Tallinn around video conferences of Thomas Piketty and the most influent French intellectuals

We invite you to attend the broadcast of exceptional conferences with the most outstanding French intellectuals of their generation

The prestigious Parisian school Ecole Normale Supérieure (ENS) is hosting a cycle of exceptional conferences about Europe with globally renown French intellectuals, from March to May. Entitled "A Certain Idea of Europe", it aims at inviting high-level experts to share their views about today's Europe, and will be broadcast in universities and institutions throughout the continent (Oxford, Aosta, Berlin...). The goal is to build a high quality, pan-European debate on the current stakes and challenges of Europe.

The French Institute of Estonia and the Permanent Representation of the European Commission invite you to live these exceptional moments in Tallinn.

Every video broadcast of the conference in Paris (50mn, in French with subtitles in English) will be followed by a live debate with local speakers and the audience (in English, 30mn) in reaction to the lecture.

  • Thursday 3 May, 5pm at the EU House (Laikmaa 15): Thomas Piketty on inequalities in Europe and democracy in the Euro area

Thomas Piketty is a french economist, world-wide known for its book Capital in the Twenty-First Century. He was awarded in 2002 as the best young economist of France and was selected in 2012 among the the most 100 influential intellectuals in the world by the review Foreign Policy. His work, which sparks a great debate on the wealth distribution and the type of capital, is focused on the economic inequalities. Convinced pro-European, he co-published in 2017 a Treaty democratizing the Euro Area (T-DEM), debating the role of democratic mechanisms technical European institutions, in order to convince the citizens that Europe belongs to them (Libération, 2017).

- Ms Karin Jõeveer, Programme Director of Economics at the Tallinn University of Technology (TTÜ)

  • Mid-May: Myriam Revault d'Allonnes

Doctor of philosophy, her works of political philosophy concentrate on, among others, the French Revolution (D’une mort à l’autre, Précipices de la révolution, 1989), political evil (Ce que l’homme fait à l’homme, 1995), compassion in politics (L’homme compassionnel, 2008),  democracy (Pourquoi nous n’aimons pas la démocratie, 2010),  authority (Le pouvoir des commencements, 2012), or representation (Le Miroir et la scène, 2016). It is based on the deep reflexion on most of the essential concept of political philosophy that Myriam Revault d’Allonnes will be invited to think about a younger concept, the one of Europe and the European Union.

  • Late May: Patrick Boucheron

Patrick Boucheron is a Professor at the Collège de France, where he holds the chair of "History of the Powers in Western Europe, 13th-16th Centuries". It is because Patrick Boucheron has always examined, from his earliest works, the relevance of different scales of analysis that the has been invited to speak in this cycle of conferences. From Europe-wide comparative history of urban phenomena to the volumes of world history that he directed (Histoire du monde au XVe siècle, Fayard, 2009; Histoire mondiale de la France, Le Seuil, 2017), Patrick Boucheron has always thought of his initial Italian field of research in the context of larger spatial and heuristic scales of analysis. Working to build bridges between history, literature and the arts, he also - and perhaps especially - questions the political effectiveness of history, creating links that liberate from "the appeasing slowness of time and the rush of events”, to borrow from his inaugural lecture.
